The recent visit by Pope Benedict XVI to Britain took the edge off the contemporary Punch-and-Judy show between secularism and religion in the public square.  There was certainly a binary opposition in his talks but it was between “aggressive secularism” and “an open secularity”.  The message was to stop the attacks, let’s talk and have a conversation. Keep the doors open.

Having been a student in the first iteration of the “Faith & Globalisation” class at Yale in 2008, and now serving as the Tony Blair Faith Foundation’s university program manager, I have had the privilege of witnessing the amazing changes within the Faith & Globalisation Initiative from two rather distinct frames of reference. Next week marks a historic moment in the fight against extreme poverty. World leaders are gathering in New York to discuss progress towards the Millennium Development Goals.

In England’s green and pleasant land saints have been thin on the ground of late, at least those recognised by the Church. So English Catholics will take a particular pleasure in the forthcoming beatification of John Henry Newman. It has drawn a Pope to our shores again, and one much in tune with the spirit and ideas in Newman’s writings. Yet Newman’s life and thinking highlight the gulf that separates us from his world of the 19th century.

Mexico is living in a difficult moment. Poverty, insecurity, corruption, drug trafficking, and such topics headline the newspapers every day. Hope is missing and the population doesn’t see the future path that all this problems are drawing. It is in this moment that understanding the relationship between faith and globalisation matters most to Mexico’s young people, giving them hope in their search for solutions.
