What is the place of religious education in school?

Posted by Brent on Mon, 27/02/2012 - 12:32pm
Last week’s Westminster Faith Debate examined religion in schools in Britain. But there’s a danger that we get so sucked into our own national preoccupations that we lose perspective. My work on research and policy extends into Europe, and I want to give a wider European perspective to the United Kingdom debates.

Posted by Brent on Tue, 21/02/2012 - 6:13pm
Yesterday, the Tony Blair Faith Foundation’s Face to Faith programme collaborated with Peace One Day on a special videoconference bringing together students around the world via video conference. Chief Executive Ruth Turner joined the morning videoconference with Jeremy Gilly and schools from the United Arab Emirates, India, and Pakistan. Micah Challenge: World Day of Social Justice

Posted by on Mon, 20/02/2012 - 10:16am
Slavery, dictators and racism are ‘evils’ which have blighted the world for centuries. And you can add extreme poverty to that twisted list. The UN World Day of Social Justice on 20 February is an excellent annual reminder of our responsibility to the world’s poor. Each generation inherits a world it can, and should, improve. Micah Challenge aims to remind 600 million Christians to pray and advocate on behalf of the poor: a focus which could provide unstoppable momentum towards the cause of eradicating extreme poverty.  Powerful, yes.

Reflections on a twitter chat

Posted by Parna on Wed, 15/02/2012 - 3:12pm
There's been a lot of tweeting about Tony Blair's live Twitter chat to mark Interfaith Harmony Week on 8th Feb - those who were genuinely asking questions on what he had to say on interfaith work; those who were watching the live feed and making their own comments on him, politics and their own pet subjects; and a few who didn't even believe he was personally there. Tony is on record as saying that he is only just getting to grips with new technology (his first mobile phone was acquired only after he left office as Prime Minister).

Tilting at 19th Century Windmills

Posted by Ian Linden on Wed, 15/02/2012 - 12:41pm
So only a third of those in the UK who identify themselves as Christian believe in the resurrection. The Richard Dawkins Foundation IPSOS MORI survey of Christian knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes in Britain, provides some useful statistics over and above what might be gleaned from British Social Attitudes surveys. Amongst other things, it suggests the inadequacy of religious education in British schools. Not surprisingly, this is not found amongst the Foundation for Reason and Science’s conclusions.
