Reflection: Service and Action

"It's good to give something back to the community." wrote the young volunteer. "Faith matters, because without it, we have no hope!"

This was just one of the reasons why sixty young people, local residents, and faith representatives were out cleaning the streets of Leicester last month. This multi faith tidy up brought together Sikhs, Hindus, Christians, Muslims and Buddhists. They wanted to take action together, to help their city.

Although the faith traditions are different, there is a value of service, which can be common to all. I look at the life of Jesus Christ, and I see a man who exemplified servant leadership. Through his work with those in need; his commands to feed the hungry and heal the sick; he ushered in God's kingdom on earth. Perhaps today, if we look to serve one another, and practice servant leadership, we too can make this world a little more like a taste of heaven.
