Thoughts for the New Year

As the clock struck midnight on December 31, and the New Year and decade began, not much had visibly changed.  However, the year 2010 is an important milestone for those concerned with malaria eradication.  The end of this year, December 2010, is the deadline set as part of the Millennium Development Goals at which time there will be universal coverage of malaria control measures (mostly bed nets).  This is a precursor to the goal of an end to malaria deaths set for 2015.

The 2010 goal may or may not be met, but the beginning of the year is a reminder that we have this goal for which to strive.  Though we are not on the ground in sub-Saharan Africa delivering bed nets, we are fighting malaria in a different way.  We are educating young people in Washington DC of the importance of this cause and achieving these goals.  We raise money, increase awareness, and advocate for U.S. support of malaria eradication to federal legislators.

We hope to achieve universal bed net coverage in 2010, and with this purpose in mind and in action, we look forward to January 1, 2016 when there will be no more malaria deaths.
