On to a New Chapter

As the days grow warmer, our days as Faiths Act Fellows are sadly drawing to a close. As of May 31st 2010, the inaugural year of the Faiths Act Fellowship programme will officially be over, and we will each venture our separate ways, back to school, back to Saskatoon, out into the real world. As sad as it is to say goodbye to all the incredible people we’ve met and experiences we’ve had from the fellowship, we are thrilled to be leaving our work in the hands of an extremely committed and enthusiastic group of leaders.

Danforth Islamic Centre Take on Malaria

On Friday April 9, 2010, Danforth Islamic Centre, located at 3018 Danforth Avenue, took part in the national Congregations Act initiative to support the fight against malaria by building awareness and raising funds after the regular Friday prayers. Although raising the minimum amount of $100 looked doubtful in this congregation, which is situated in one of Toronto’s priority neighbourhoods, the results were surprising when the congregation contributed $315 for this great cause.

Toronto Area Interfaith Council puts their money where there mouth is!

The Faiths Act Fellows are working hard to create meaningful interfaith relationships among young people of faith by having them take action together on a very important issue – the fight against malaria. In many cases, there are already strong interfaith councils amongst religious leaders meeting regularly in their host communities. Often times these councils get a reputation for focusing on dialogue rather than action and in a vast majority of these committees, young people are very underrepresented. When three of us Fellows entered the Toronto Area Interfaith Council meeting on Tuesday, we were the youngest people in the room and assumed that this Council too focused more on dialogue than action. Faiths Act week: A Week of faiths acting towards a common goal

Erica and Areeba have joined forces with the other pair of fellows in Toronto to come together to raise awareness and funds to prevent deaths caused by malaria. They will do this by hosting an array of multi-faith events throughout the week of April 24 – May 1. People of all faiths and ages will come together and donate their time, energy, and money to ending deaths from malaria. This will show Canada and the world the positive impact people of faith can, and do have, especially when they work together. You, your group of friends, your school or your congregation can join the fellows and their hub leaders in making this extraordinary week a success. Or Donate directly at Spread the net-Faiths Act donation Page. Everything donated will be matched, so your dollar counts for twice as much.

To Judge or not to Judge

In my fear of being judged by others, I had judged them, all 300 of them; thus creating a barrier between us , the very barrier that I was working to bring down.

Growing up in the open-minded, non-creedal group that is the Unitarian Congregation of Saskatoon, I was open to discover my own religious identity. The Religious Education program began my introduction into every religion and faith out there.
