Erin Toolis is a 23 year old Buddhist originally from the village of Lisbon, Ohio. She graduated from Denison University in 2008 with a B.S. in psychology and spent the last year working at an art center for homeless youth in Seattle, Washington. Erin will be spending the next eight months with Micah Challenge in Portland, Oregon, where she is excited to spread the light and love of interfaith action. Notes for Nets a Great Success

On April 24th, 2010, 150 people gathered to hear the soulful expression of David Bazan (Pedro the Lion, and Headphones fame), Shannon Stephens (Marsuki), Matthew Haussler, and Sonya Yun: four artists from the Pacific Northwest who performed at the benefit concert Notes for Nets to protect mothers and children in Mali from malaria.

Looking forward

With the close of the first Faiths Act Fellowship, Katie and I will be leaving Portland. However, interfaith action in Portland to eradicate malaria from our world has only just begun! Working in this city has been truly inspirational and as we reflect on all that young people in Portland are doing, we are excited to see what the future will bring.

Portland Sleeps Out to End Malaria: reflections from Michael Nelson

On April 23rd, 2010, World Malaria Day weekend, young people from all over Portland gathered to bring awareness to the 1 million deaths caused every year by malaria. At the Sleep Out to End Malaria, FaithsAct Portland wrote letters and recorded messages to our elected officials urging for funding and change. Michael, a student at Jefferson High School, writes about why he decided to take action.

Reflections: A Day of Interfaith Service for Global Change

Last weekend, a group of seven people went to a park in southwest Portland. It was a bright, crisp morning, and the beauty of the green ivy snaking up the strong doug firs in the quiet of the forest might have taken away my breath, barely visible because of the chill in the air. Except that this ivy was not just beautiful, it was also deadly.

One way that Project Muso is affecting community-oriented change is through training local women in Yirimadjo to be community health workers. Mali: First Impressions
