Natasha Steele is 22 years old and from London. She grew up in a modern orthodox Jewish family, and this year with Myriam Volk will be working in London at the Jewish Social Action Hub with Tzedek. Since the age of 16 she has been exploring the world, going to countries with fascinating cultures and languages, constantly learning from the people she meets on her journey. Her most recent trip to Mali, as part of being a Faiths Act Fellow brought her into contact with people so inspiring that she came out with a new perspective on life. She practices Capoeira, can speak some Portuguese, juggles, can say “butterfly” in 3 languages. You can email Natasha at natasha.steele@faithsactfellows.org

Myriam Volk is 22 and Christian. She studied Maths and French at the University of Leeds. Now she is leaving the wild wind-swept moors of Yorkshire and her hometown of Liverpool for the shiny lights of London. There she will work as a Faiths Act Fellow together with her partner Natasha, hosted by Tzedek at the Jewish Social Action Hub. Over the next 8 months, Natasha and Myriam will work together to establish a hub of multi-faith action to eradicate deaths due to malaria. A random fact about Myriam: she gathers earrings in every place she visits and is a bit obsessed. You can email Myriam at myriam.volk@faithsactfellows.org

The Day After Tomorrow

Are we seeing the day after tomorrow today? On January 12th the world’s eyes were glued to the news watching the devastation that had wreaked through Haiti after the earthquake. The earthquake was a catastrophic 7 on the Richter scale and over 200,000 peoples’ lives were taken away. While the world was still talking about Haiti, on February 27th another huge earthquake hit Chile, reaching a colossal 8.8 on the Richter scale.

As leaders meet in Copenhagen Myriam Volk asks what does climate change have to do with malaria?

Climate change is (hopefully!) on everyone's minds these days. Last Thursday I got the chance to be part of a Christian Muslim Youth Forum on Climate Change, an excellent opportunity to see multi-faith action in practice. As I sat there discussing funding for climate change, I was struck by the impact climate change will have (and is already having) on malaria and the Millennium Development Goals as a whole.

Dr Seuss and malaria

In 1943, Dr. Seuss was commissioned to do a pamphlet for the United States Army Orientation Course, educating troops in the tropics about how to avoid dropping dead from malaria. The pamphlet that resulted is amazing, starring Ann, the Anopheles Mosquito who’s just dying to meet you… and drink your blood!

WHAT DOES MALI HAVE TO DO WITH SUCCOT (it has already passed, BUT will be back next year!)?Natasha

Today, all over the world there are people living their lives in shelters that sometimes do not even have the two and a half sides required for a succah. These people are not free but trapped in the entanglement of poverty. Their land may be too eroded or dried up to gather a harvest, and so are unable to sustain themselves agriculturally. This then can bring further repercussions, such as health and sanitation problems. As Jews having survived so much, we must help others to survive through their own circumstances as well. As Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks wrote, “Human life is sacred. It means that in some ultimate sense we are all equal”. Therefore the life that is being lived in vain in other parts of the world should be seen as part of our lives and therefore we have an obligation to act.

Why I want to Act - Natasha

Mali, The Land of Hospitality - Natasha

Three years ago I spent seven months in East and Southern Africa, teaching English and traveling through the boundless, beautiful countryside’s of 7 countries. However my experiences in the three weeks I was in Mali this year, taught me so much more than before, and that I could ever have imagined or dreamed of. Mali was the former empire of West Africa. Does it show? No. Does it matter? No. Mali in its own right is an empire within itself.

The effect of malaria on the community of Yirimadjo, Mali - Myriam

I could talk here – and quite copiously – about the negative effects of malaria on the community... but I want to focus on something much more positive: the way the community in Mali is rallying together to combat malaria.
