Tony Blair writes guest column for the Financial Times: Faith can help heal bodies as well as souls

Two months ago I joined Nigerian ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and a number of the country’s religious leaders in Kuje, a township outside Abuja to promote a multi-faith programme to train 300,000 Nigerian religious leaders in malaria prevention. The idea is simple but potentially very effective. Most communities in Africa do not have hospitals or clinics, but all have a church or mosque.

Baking for bednets to combat Malaria in Africa

Twenty kilograms of flour. Eight kilograms of sugar. Two large bags of oats. Six dozens of eggs and 10 pounds of butter. During a 12-hour baking marathon in Toronto Saturday, six young women from different faith backgrounds kneaded, battered, sifted and crimped these ingredients not only to churn out tasty pastries for those fallen on hard luck in homeless shelters but also raise money for health care and education in Africa.

Brownies for Bednets is an initiative by Torontonian Hilary Keachie, a member of The Faiths Act Fellowship, a program launched by the Tony Blair Faith Foundation and the Interfaith Youth Core to foster interfaith cooperation and social action

The competition will accept entries in eight languages from people under the age of 25 of all faiths from the world over. Blair argued that it would provide a chance for young Muslims, in particular, to illustrate their religion in a manner different to what is often portrayed in the media and popular culture.

Tony Blair Delighted to See Hindu Youth Undertake one Week of Selfless Service

‘Sewa’ which translates to ‘selfless service’ is an integral part of Hindu dharma (path of righteousness). For this reason, National Hindu Students Forum (UK) [NHSF] provides a platform for Hindu students to undertake regular sewa. Although this could just be a charitable donation, it goes way beyond this. Sewa lies not in the action, but the state of mind that precedes it.

Faith in Action - The Washington Post/ On Faith

As Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams occupies a unique position in the religious world, with the potential to bridge religious and secular. As leader of Britain's established religion, he engages constantly with political leaders. So the title of his recent speech in London jumped out at me: "Relating Intelligently to Religion". Heaven knows, surely that's what we need.

Our relationship with the poor is not about charity- Jem Jebbia reporting for The Times

Sometimes it’s hard as a Buddhist to engage my own community in social action. Many would say it is against their theology to be active at all, especially in politically charged affairs. But I learned yesterday why Buddhists should not only be involved in social action, but should be at the forefront.

You can find faith in very unexpected places… Sean Rose reporting for The Times

Up early on Sunday. Adrenalin still running. A Catholic Mass in the Ukrainian (or Byzantine) Rite was happening somewhere in town. I arrived a few minutes late to find people still waiting outside the Church: about a dozen, mostly men, mostly much older than me. For an early Summer’s morning it was surprisingly cold. We started to get impatient. The priest must have overslept. I began to wish I had done the same and found somewhere to attend Mass later in the day.

Since the launch of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation’s new Face to Faith programme in June, teenagers say that barriers are already being broken down and ignorance is being replaced with respect and understanding. Elliott Grainger, aged 13, said: “Through the programme we are understanding different cultures and faith a lot more from people our own age.”
